How to Fringe - Fringe 101...The Windsor Fringe in 2010

  1. CHECK THE MAP
    • Indoor theatre and other performing arts shows: are being held at The Joy Family Theatre,. The Daniel Patrick Kelly Theatre and the Pentastar Theatre at The Capitol Theatre. The Kids Venue is indoors at the Art Gallery of Windsor (AGW), with a few workshops outside in the parket adjacent to the AGW which is located at 401 Riverside Drive. The AGW will also host two nights of French language theatre Thursday, July 22 and Friday, July 23.
    • Outdoor events:
      • The Windsor International Buskers Festival will be held at a number of pitches in downtown Windsor (see yellow squares on Fringe map) but the primary location is on University Avenue, at the street closure in front of the Windsor Armouries from Friday,, July 16 to Sunday, July 25th, 2010 each day from 4 PM to 10 PM. There is no charge for this festival.
      • The Chalk & Chocolate Festival, along University Avenue Fringe Corridor West from Ouellette to Goyeau. Artists will outside in the Downtown Farmer's Market area from July 17 to Sunday, July 18th, 2010. There is no charge for this festival.
      • Buskin' to the Beat will be held at various outdoor locations along the University Fringe Corridor (Starting at Victoria Avenue on the East to McDougal on the West) and along the Ouellette Fringe Corridor (Starting at Pitt in the North and extending South to Wyandotte). Buskin to the Beat musical performances are held during the 'change over hour' between shows in the Joy Family Theatre and Daniel Patrick Kelly Theatres at the Capitol Theatre. Buskin to the Beat artists will perform on the sidewalks in front of Phog, Milk, The Poor House, Chanosos, Vermouth, The Manchester, The Honest Lawyer, The Windsor Armouries and at the former Greyhound Bus Station.facing on Chatham street.There is no charge for the performances, just grab a chair or find a place to sit or stand and enjoy!.
      • Kids' Fringe Starts Tuesday, July 20 and runs daily from 11 AM to 5 PM Monday to Sunday, July 25, and 11 AM noon to 5 PM on at the Art Gallery of Windsor. Activities range from kids theatre shows to learning to juggle, Belly, modern and other dancing workshops, a create your own play workshop, arts & crafts, and colour guard workshops activities are all part of the Fun. A one time purchase of $3 per child and for each family member that accompanies them, is all that is needed to participate and is good for all five days.
      • The Visual Fringe is presented in stores, store-fronts and restaurants throughout the entire period. There is no charge for this festival.
  2. CHECK THE SHOWS
    The descriptions for each show are intended to give you the flavour of the performance. There are theatre, cabaret and musical performances from hilarious to serious, for all ages. If you’re attending as a family with children under 14 the ‘Kids Venue’ at Charles Clark Square with Fringe shows and activities, read the descriptions and advisories carefully to be sure you see shows you’ll be comfortable with, or challenge yourself and see something you might not normally attend.
  3. CHECK THE SCHEDULE
    Once you’ve determined which shows you want to see, the schedule will allow you to plan to see the shows you want, take in some of the other activities and visit a downtown restaurant for a bite to eat. We recommend spending some time with the Fringe Guide so that you don’t miss out on anything.
  4. PURCHASE YOUR FRINGE BUTTON
    One $3 FRINGE button PER PERSON is required to attend the regular shows in addition to a ticket. Children need and their family members accompanying them need to purchase a Fringe buttons to attend the Kids Fringe, but this button is good for use all week long! The buttons can be purchased from 10 AM to 5 PM before the festival and from 10 AM to 10 PM during the festival at Fringe Headquarters at 100 University Avenue Headquarters, at the Art Gallery of Windsor during Kids Fringe, and at the venue boxes offices and at the Devonshire Mall info booth starting July 5th, 2010..
  5. TICKETS! TICKETS! TICKETS!
    50% of the Tickets are available for purchased in advance from Devonshire mall, the Fringe HQ and online at www.windsorfringe.com TICKETS, PURCHASE TICKETS ON LINE (via Ticketscene.ca).. The DAY OF EACH PEFRFORMANCE at least 50% will be available for sale at the door one hour before each performance.
  6. LISTEN AND TALK!
    Listen to what people are saying and offer up your own voice about the performances. We’re sure the festival will be buzzing with opinions.
  7. GET TO THE VENUE EARLY!
    This year, each company may decide weather or not to seat latecomers. Many Fringes do not allow latecomers at all without exception, so no one is allowed into the theatre once a performance has begun. This year, we have left it to each company to decide. Please do not risk being late, because you could be refused at the door. And, because all box office revenues go to the performers, the FRINGE is not allowed to offer refunds.
  8. SEE ALL THE ATTRACTIONS
    Take time to see the Buskers’ performances, the live music on the streest. the Chalk art and the festival vendors and Artcite’s Visual Fringe exhibits. Make sure you take in the full experience of the WINDSOR INTERNATIONAL FRINGE FESTIVAL.

The Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals is built on four principles:

  1. No Artistic Direction. Artists are selected by ‘first come, first served’.
  2. No Censorship. Artists have complete freedom to present their work.
  3. Accessibility to artists. Anyone can apply to the Fringe.
  4. Accessibility to audience. Ticket prices are kept low and 100% of the ticket price is returned to the artists you see on stage.

The Windsor International Fringe Festival was founded in 2007 by Actors Theatre of Windsor (ATW), a not-for-profit professional theatre company.  as part of its community outreach program (ATW Actors Umbrella).

ATW Actors Umbrella's aim in producing the Windsor Fringe is to increase affordable and accessible avenues for professional theatre:

to create opportunities for independent artists to showcase their work;
to grow Windsor’s cultural identity and profile;

Established in January 2006 Actors Theatre of Windsor ( ATW) is a professional theatre company, who's aim is to develop a viable professional entertainment industry in Southwestern Ontario and Southeastern Michigan.

Co-founded by Mona el Baroudi and Gordon Mackenzie, the public programming of ATW has two core components:

ATW Main Stage, which produces professional theatre and our season of shows paying participating trained actors, and production crew a living wage;
